Ever thought about being an engineer in transportation? Part of their job is to design and plan roads. They may need to model the traffic within an area by conducting traffic counts and validate their findings by comparing it to national traffic models. For example, when building a supermarket, you must consider how much traffic this will generate and the designs must take into consideration future traffic flow and the possibilty of further development within the area. They would have to run modelling software for junctions and car parks. Within the design process you must take into consideration issues such as drainage, foundation and tarmac thickness, lighting, kerbs, traffic signs, environmental impacts, air quality and noise.
